May 6, 2009 — Dolly Parton's work appeared on Broadway for the first time just last month, and she's already picked up a Tony nomination for 9 To 5: The Musical.
Dolly was tabbed as a finalist for Best Original Score, according to Broadway World, after she expanded the music from the 1980 movie for a full theatrical production. Movie co-stars Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda showed up for last week's official grand opening ceremony at New York's Marriott Marquis Theatre
While Broadway seems a far cry from Music Row, Dolly sees a connection between her regular art and the Great White Way.
She "always thought about doing my life story as a musical, Dolly told USA Today.
The requirement for songs from musicals to tell stories, or enhance them, made the challenge a little less daunting than it might appear. Dolly insists that country music and the best of Broadway20have common ground.
"Most country songs, certainly all the stuff I've written, are stories, driven by characters," she said.
The 63rd annual Tony Awards will air on CBS from Radio City Music Hall in New York June 7.
