Writers of Strait's 57th #1 Honored

George Strait didn't make Thursday's No. 1 party for his latest No. 1 song, "River of Love," but his absence didn't dampen the mood.
The party hosted by BMI at Blue Moon Lagoon — the floating restaurant situated on the Cumberland River and owned by Strait's longtime manager, Irv Woolsey — honored the song's writers, Shawn Camp, Billy Burnette and Dennis Morgan.
"The song just fell out so quick," Billy said. "The demo went so easy, and then we were blessed with a little magic."
"Harlan Howard used to say, 'You just need three chords and the truth," Dennis added. "Well, we beat him. ('River of Love') is just two chords and the truth.' "
About 100 people turned out to celebrate the song, George's 57th No. 1 hit. Tony Brown, who produced the record, was in attendance along with Luke Lewis, head of Universal Music Group (which includes Strait's label, Mercury Records). Jody Williams, BMI's vice president of writer/publisher relations, Nashville, was master of ceremonies for the lighthearted gathering, also attended by the writers' publishers and others from Music Row.
