April 10, 2009 — Kenny Chesney is putting the finishing touches on rehearsals for the Sun City Carnival Tour, which opens next weekend, and fans can get a brief look at the preparations when Kenny appears — along with Darius Rucker, Carrie Underwood and Sugarland — on Tuesday's edition of "The Oprah Winfrey Show."
Kenny and his comrades sat down with Oprah in Chicago on his birthday, but not before her crew got a first-hand look at the logistics of putting together a show that involves three rehearsal areas, five computer systems, 85 people and tons of cable, speakers, hi-def video screens and staging. Oh,20and a giant fish.
"If she's going to give you the time, then you better give her something pretty special," Kenny says. "That lady deserves no less."
While the "Oprah" event provides a peek at the scale of the Sun City production, Kenny hopes that'll just be background for ticket-buyers this summer when they begin streaming into his shows, including a dozen dates at NFL stadiums.
"You don't want people thinking about how many hours you might've spent on that piece of video for a song," he says. "You just want them to go, 'Wow.'"
Kenny's "Oprah" partners Sugarland will join him on the stadium dates this year, as will Montgomery Gentry and the tour's full-time openers Miranda Lambert and Lady Antebellum.
