June 4, 2009 — Keith Urban has made a habit in his previous tours of jumping off the stage and heading into the crowd to play guitar solos at the feet of the people who paid to see him.
He's brought that access to a new level in his Escape Together World Tour, which launched last month, and a release from his publicist suggests he's popped into the audience roughly two dozen times during the first nine dates. In the process, he's lost a guitar, nearly had his shirt ripped off and even had to stop playing from the press of flesh in a stage design he calls "the greatest toy box I've ever played in."
"Our goal every night is to play with the crowd, not at them," Keith says. "We designed the stage to make that possible. The truth is t hat I don't even know when I'll leave the stage to go into the stands, but that's what makes it so much fun. You never know what is going to happen."
One thing that can be predicted: Keith takes the tour back out for a trio of dates this weekend. He'll play Cincinnati on Friday, Detroit on Saturday and Fort Wayne, Ind., on Sunday. Taylor Swift is the opening act for all three concerts.
He'll be featured in a special Keith Urban block of programming Thursday on GAC. He's in Conversations From The Road at 8 p.m. ET, Ultimate Keith Urban Fans at 9:30 p.m. ET and The Collection at 10 p.m. ET.
