July 9, 2009 — Two of country music's most distinct female vocalists, Patty Loveless and Rosanne Cash, have enlisted a bevy of significant artists for their next album releases, which come in back-to-back weeks later this fall.
Bruce Springsteen, Vince Gill, Emmylou Harris and Elvis Costello are among the outside contributors to the discs, each of which points to country's heritage.
Patty's Mountain Soul II, set for release Sept. 29, is a sequel to a much-acclaimed 2001 album that explored her Appalachian roots. Vince and Emmylou make appearances, as do former Flying Burrito Brother Al Perkins, vocalists Jon Randall and Rebecca Lynn Howard, and bluegrass figures Del and Ronnie McCoury, Rob Ickes, Mike Auldridge, Carl Jackson and Bryan Sutton.
"It's Appalachian, bluegrass and country combined," says Patty of II. "You should never try to duplicate something like Mountain Soul. What you should do is enhance. So this is like=2 0a continuation."
Rosanne's album, The List, follows on Oct. 6, with appearances by the Boss, Elvis, Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy and singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright. But its most significant contribution came from her late father, Johnny Cash, who tried to educate her in country music's history by giving her a list of 100 country songs that she needed to learn and study.
"I endeavored to learn them all, and it was an education," she says. "I looked to that list as a standard of excellence and to remind myself of the tradition from which I come. This album enables me to validate the connection to my heritage rather than run away from it, and to tie all the threads together: past and future, legacy and youth, tradition [and] timelessness."
The album revisits material by such historic legends as Jimmie Rodgers, Hank Williams and the Carter Family as well as artists who were her father's contemporaries, including Merle Haggard, Bob Dylan and Patsy Cline.
Tracks appearing on The List (and the artist who made the definitive version) include:
1. "Miss the Mississippi and You" (Jimmie Rodgers)
2. "Motherless Children" (the Carter Family)
3. "Sea of Heartbreak" (Don Gibson) * features Bruce Springsteen
4. "Take These Chains From My Heart" (Hank Williams)
5. "I'm Movin' On" (Hank Snow)
6. "She's Got You" (Patsy Cline)
7. "Heartaches by the Number" (Ray Price) * features Elvis Costello
8. " 500 Miles Away From Home" (Bobby Bare"
9. "Long Black Veil" (Lefty Frizzell) * features Jeff Tweedy
10. "Silver Wings" (Merle Haggard) * features Rufus Wainwright
11. "Girl From the North Country" (Johnny Cash & Bob Dylan)
12. "Bury Me Under the Weeping Willow" (the Carter Family)
