April 7, 2009 — Dolly Parton has a major career moment Tuesday when 9 To 5: The Musical begins previews on Broadway.
The New York theater district is a long way from East Tennessee, and she admits some trepidation about how the production will go over in Manhattan.
"We get a little nervous with the economy and everything on Broadway, but it's a good show and I hope people do get a chance to see it, 'cause we have a wonderful cast and hopefully the music's good," she told Suzanne Alexander on the national radio show GAC Nights: Live From Nashville. "They've certainly made it sound like it's good with the way they sing. And there's some great dancers, and the show is real funny. It's got a lot more laughs and more comedy than the actual movie, so it's fun and entertaining."
One good sign for 9 To 5: It won Dolly a trophy for Best Musical Score at last month's Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Awards following an initial run at L.A.E2s Ahmanson Theatre. Reba McEntire, who won awards for her work on Broadway in Annie Get Your Gun, went to one of those California performances, and Dolly says she got good feedback from Reba.
"She loved it," Dolly noted. "I actually even wrote one of the fantasy songs — the character I played, Doralee Rose, was from Texas, and so in honor of Reba, I wrote a few lines, 'Just like Annie Oakley in a Wild West rodeo.' So I threw a little line in there for Reba hopin' she would pick up on it. She didn't mention it, but I thought, 'Well, I hope you know I wrote that line just for you.'"
Once the Broadway show is well in hand, Dolly will be thinking again about her Tennessee mountain home. Dollywood kicks off another season in short order, and 2010 will be the theme park's 25th year in business.
